Community, care and connection at its core

A new 82-unit development in Manning, representing a fresh way of independent living for residents 55 years or over, has been launched publicly.

The $25m Mankara development at 52 Bickley Crescent is being billed as the first of its kind and will see 82 strata titled apartments built for over 55s and dependent residents as well as a brand-new café and community facilities spanning 5,562 sqm.  Prices for the apartments range from $309,000 to $799,000.

The development is powered by not-for-profit Southcare with a robust local team including Total Project Management, Cameron Chisholm and Nicol Architects, PACT Builders, Bourkes Property and Abode Strata.

Southcare CEO Dr Nicky Howe said seeing the development take shape, particularly after the effects of COVID-19 highlighted the effects of social isolation on so many, was palpable.

“This is a development that has community, care and connection at its absolute core,” Dr Howe said.

“Not only does it address a very real shortage of appropriate and diverse housing for aged and dependent people, it provides a social solution for residents and our wider community.

“More than 27,000 people who are over 55 years of age currently live within a 10km radius of Mankara and they tell us they want to retain their housing asset, have better quality and safer options as they age.

“This development is for them and any others who want to downsize with dignity, knowing they can also access care and support services if they later choose to.

“Housing is key ingredient in the creation of safer, more connected communities and this development means our older community members can keep living at home with a lower cost of living and less maintenance but with greater independence, improved safety and a higher social, mental and psychological connection.”

The name Mankara represents a merging of the two locations of Manning and Karawarra and has been in the works for nine years.

It most recently received an extension to its Development Approval, making it current to April 2022.

The development recognises housing and its importance to the welfare and wellbeing of aged and dependent people and being located just 7kms out of the CBD and near established shops, parks, schools, transport and local amenities means it is quite literally integrating the old with the new.

Most of the apartments comprise two bedrooms and two bathrooms.

Spanning three levels, the development’s offering is diverse, with three-bedroom, two-bathroom options, as well as two-bedroom, one-bathroom and one-bedroom and one-bathroom configurations.

Construction is expected to start later this year, with Southcare celebrating 40 years of being a proactive carer, connector and contributor in the local community in 2022.

“To create a development some 40 years after we first started helping the community in 1982 with just nine hand knitted blankets is a pretty remarkable feat, Dr Howe said.

“The vision for this project is to help people live independently and to give back to the community, which really has been our ethos for 40 years.  How exciting that we get to realise that today?”.
